OPINION: Integrity or Farce? The ABLP’s Legacy of Corruption Unmasked

In an audacious display of political satire that would leave even the most seasoned satirists gaping, Regis Burton’s recent letter lavishing praise on the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) for their “standard of integrity” has undoubtedly become the comedic highlight of the year. One could be forgiven for thinking Burton, a figure who has long navigated the murky waters of political opportunism, has now ventured into the realm of stand-up comedy. However, the joke, it appears, is on us, as we’re expected to swallow this outrageous claim without so much as a chuckle.

The assertion that the ABLP embodies a “standard of integrity” is not merely laughable; it is an insult to the intelligence of every Antiguan and Barbudan citizen. This is a party whose tenure has been marred by a litany of scandals, allegations of corruption, and a blatant disregard for the principles of transparency and accountability. To attribute to such an administration a standard of anything other than deceitfulness and corruption is to engage in a farce of the highest order.

Under the current ABLP administration, Antigua and Barbuda have witnessed an unprecedented erosion of democratic norms and ethical standards. The government’s dealings, shrouded in secrecy, its contracts negotiated in the shadows, and its projects embarked upon without the requisite scrutiny, all point to a deep-seated culture of corruption that has taken root. The ABLP’s governance has been characterized by a systemic lack of integrity, where political expediency trumps the public interest, and personal gain is often placed above national welfare.

To claim, as Burton does, that this administration upholds a “standard of integrity” is to mock the very concept of integrity itself. It is akin to claiming that a desert is an oasis simply because one found a mirage of water. The reality on the ground, borne out by the experiences of the Antiguan and Barbudan people, tells a starkly different story. A story of missed opportunities, of squandered potential, and of a leadership more concerned with lining its pockets than lifting its people.

The ABLP’s legacy, unless dramatically altered, will be remembered not for its integrity but for its contributions to the manual of how not to govern. A guidebook of graft, a primer on patronage, and a dissertation on deceit. That Burton can, with a straight face, laud such an administration for its integrity is either a testament to his unparalleled sense of humor or a disturbing indication of how far the standards of political discourse have fallen.

As citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, it is incumbent upon us to challenge these audacious misrepresentations of our political reality. We must hold our leaders to account, demand transparency in their dealings, and insist on integrity as the minimum standard for public office. The joke, after all, is not just on Regis Burton or the ABLP; it’s on us if we accept their narrative without question. It’s high time we demand a governance that truly reflects the integrity, resilience, and spirit of our people, rather than settling for the farcical standards set by the current administration.

  1. I wholeheartedly agreed with the writer; the ALP is anything but transparent, its current leader followed by his cabinet members are corrupt the core.

Additionally, the people who voted to keep them in power are the ones who are responsible for the cycle for continued corruption.

The opposition party members are not doing enough with challenging ALP’ s corruption, they should be organising ongoing lawful protests, highlighting ALP’S corruption and where necessary carryout night protests; there’s a need for the opposition to demonstrates that they are the party in waiting to governed the country. I am a firm UPP supporter, but I have not heard enough convincing
    arguments coming from the opposition.

There are Lists of unresolved scandals that has come
from ALP administration: Antigua Airways, Olabanjo and his “Tight friends”, the PM’ involvement with the smuggled so called asylum seekers, Air Pemace, pineapple farm, the destruction of our Argiculture farm, the Chinese acquiring land in Pears Village to the point they have fenced public roads. The list is not exhausted, but where are the voices of UPP?

  2. Bravo sir very well said….Mr Barton must be living on an illusionary versión of Antigua! But if he is one of them, his views are hardly surprising.
