City South Residents Oppose the Nomination of MP Steadroy ‘Cutie’ Benjamin for a National Award

Increasing numbers of residents in St. John’s City South are opposing the nomination of their parliamentary representative, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, for knighthood.

A petition to the National Honours and Award Committee from constituents now in circulation, outlines grave concerns about the bestowal of the highest national honor to Benjamin. Residents cite the MP’s alleged involvement in nefarious activities, charges of criminal conduct, bad advice provided to the government and poor representation of the people, as the main reasons why the nomination should be rescinded.
Residents are particularly outraged that a national honor would even be considered in light of current poor conditions throughout the constituency.  Under Benjamin’s 30-year tenure as the representative, residents claim that their standard of living has deteriorated and the city of St. John’s has fallen into a state of disrepair.
“What we allow is what will continue. Benjamin’s consistent and troubling track record for over thirty years, render him unfit for this national recognition. By honoring Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin we would be rewarding bad performance and reinforcing a culture of entitlement. This sets a poor example for our constituents, particularly our youth. It also cheapens the concept of national service and erodes our national pride,” said Onekha Elvin, UPP Branch Chair for St. John’s City South.
Residents are encouraged to sign the petition to express their disapproval to the National Honours and Awards Committee about bestowing the honorable title of “Sir” on Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin.

  1. Would it be possible to set up an electronic petition that would allow others that cannot physically sign the petition?

It;is an absolute outrage that Benjamin should be considered for a knighthood.

Benjamin is a disgrace to the nation, it was him who sanctioned the police to gassed Antiguans on our soil during a peaceful demonstration. We should not only engaged in petition signing, we should camp outside the Governor General’s office and voice our opinion strongly against Benjamin’s nomination.

He is a total disgrace not only to his constituents but the entire country.

  2. Steadroy Curie Benjamin is most deserving of this Knighthood. Mr. Benjamin has paid his dues- he has served his people selflessly for more than 3 decades.
The same people like the eagle and her family that was supportive of geselle isaac getting awarded, shameful.
    Congrats Sir Steadroy Benjamin

  3. This gentleman has served this country with distinction for almost 40 years. Only Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Snr and Sir Robin Yearwood have served the people of this nation in parliament longer than Hon. Steadroy Benjamin. It is important to note that he has served in parliament longer than the former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and all of the Upp Ministers.

He changed the legal architecture of Antigua and Barbuda and made this country the leading legal dursiction with respect to legal developments in the OECS.
He was responsible for bringing the 5th landed UWI campus to this country so that all antiguans and barbudans, and residents of the Oecs, once qualified can have access to tertiary education.

For over 40 years he has been involved in community affairs by sponsoring basketball teams, football clubs and social events in Antigua and Barbuda. He has assisted hundreds of young men and women to obtain scholarships in various fields to pursue education in universities world wide.

Every carnival you can hear him analyzing calpyso and making cultural contributions for the development of the art form.

This award should have been made a very long time ago and it is only right and just that all persons support this award.

Importantly his nomination was made with the fast majority support with the constituents of St. John’s City South who love this man and have returned him to parliament in seven consecutive election cycles. They will definitely do so again when the time arises in the future.
It is time for us in this country to move away from partisan politics and give honor where honor is due and do not be misled by persons whom he defeated at the polls and other disgruntled upp supporters who always try to destroy individuals and assassinate their character.

  4. Of it is based on years of service then there are hundreds of deserving citizens that should also be on that list. Whom have never been mentioned
