Two local organisations are benefitting from funds raised locally and regionally during CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank’s 7th Annual Walk for the Cure which was held last October.
The Bank’s Country Manager Glen Smith noted: “Our participation in our Annual CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for a Cure is important in terms of increasing awareness of the disease; raising funds for cancer care, showing support for cancer survivors; and remembering those who have passed.
He added that the bank viewed the walk as: “an integral part of CIBC FirstCaribbean’s continuing commitment to be engaged with the real issues facing our clients and their communities. By becoming personally involved in this event and also raising funds, we are demonstrating that CIBC FirstCaribbean’s commitment to Antigua and Barbuda is about more than handing over a donation.”
He thanked the sponsors, many of whom were present at the ceremony and challenged the staff of the bank, sponsors and the general public to get involved so that the funds raised can be doubled this year.
“I know that $50,000 is really a drop in the bucket, but every cent counts and I am challenging everyone to get involved so that we can double this donation during this year’s Walk.”
The bank manager also thanked the local and regional sponsors: Townhouse Mega Store, Antigua Power Company, Observer Group of Companies, D&W Digital Solutions, Wishing Well Inc., Linton Mark Contractors, Hermitage Bay, Antigua Plumbing & Hardware Centre, Falmouth Harbour Marina, British Airways, Anjo Insurances, Hadeed Motors, Buff Up Fitness, Lipstick Antigua, Goddard Catering, Frank B. Armstrong, Terminix, Sagicor, Hutchinsons, Antigua Dairy, Cool and Smooth and Regional Sponsors: Flow, Visa and Going Places Travel.
“Many thanks also to Mrs. Julia Joseph, our Walk for the Cure Coordinator, her committee and all our staff members who work tirelessly year after year, in planning and executing fundraising activities.”
Speaking during the presentation President of Breast Friends, Mrs. Eunetta Bird thanked the bank for its unwavering support over the past 7 years:
“Your donations over the year have allowed us to intensify our educational campaign and public awareness campaigns by conducting seminars and workshops; and offering support to families.”
She implored everyone to adopt healthier life styles and have an annual medical check-up.
“Cancers are on the rise. And not just breast and prostate but other cancers like stomach cancer. We must be more aware of what we eat,” she said.
Ms. Salma Crump, Head of Marketing and Communications at Mount St. John Medical Centre also thanked the bank, its staff and the many sponsors for the timely donation and its commitment to the ongoing work at its Oncology Department.
“This money has already been earmarked as there are many improvements being undertaken to make the Oncology Department more comfortable for patients and staff,” she said.
The 8th Annual CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for the Cure will be held on the first weekend of October, this year.
