(Loop News) — United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean has confirmed that Antigua and Barbuda passport holders currently do not need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or a visa to enter and transit through British ports of entry.

High Commissioner Scott Furssedonn-Wood gave the assurance when he met Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne last week.
“The High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean assured PM Browne that despite circulating reports, the global implementation of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has not yet started. Its global rollout will start in October, with Antigua and Barbuda’s at a yet-to-be-confirmed date in 2024. Resident Commissioner Ms [Lindsy] Thompson reassured PM Browne the British High Commission will give advance notice of the rollout date,” the High Commission in St John said in a statement.
The confirmation from Furssedonn-Wood follows speculation that the UK would remove Antigua and Barbuda and other Caribbean countries with Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programs from their visa-free travel list similar to what happened with Dominica and Vanuatu.
Last month, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman told the House of Commons that Dominica and Vanuatu were removed from the visa-free list after an examination of their CBI programs had “shown clear and evident abuse of the scheme, including the granting of citizenship to individuals known to pose a risk to the UK”.
She continued: “The decision to impose these visa requirements has been taken solely for migration and border security reasons and is not a sign of poor relations with these countries. Any decision to change a visa regime is not taken lightly and we keep our border and immigration system under regular review to ensure it continues to work in the UK national interest”.
The UK and European Union previously indicated that they will be taking steps to remove countries with CBI from their visa-free lists due to concern for their national security.
The Caribbean CBI countries recently met with the EU to discuss their programs and they assured that their vetting processes are transparent and safe.
