MORE ON TAMMY:
Hurricane Watches and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued in the northern Leeward Islands Thursday as Tropical Storm Tammy heads its way.
The storm reached official tropical storm status Wednesday, and forecasts indicate the tropical storm could threaten the northern Leeward Islands with gusty winds and tropical downpours starting Friday and lasting into the weekend.
Tropical Storm Tammy is about 200 miles east of Barbados and 300 miles east-southeast of Martinique.
The cyclone is moving west-northwest at 13 mph and a slower west to west-northwest motion is expected to continue through Thursday night. A turn to the northwest is then forecast on Friday, and that motion should continue into the weekend.
Maximum sustained winds are around 60 mph with higher gusts, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Tammy will gradually strengthen as it approaches the Leeward Islands.
