Almost 30 years after retiring from the Ottos Comprehensive School, Miriam Samuel returned on Earth Day, to plant a pomegranate tree with some of the current students. Mrs. Samuel taught Craft at Ottos Comprehensive School for 14 years and it was the last of nine schools where she taught in her 40-year career.

Accompanied by community advocate Jermaine Edwards, Mrs. Samuel met with Agricultural Science teacher Mrs. Kazel Pelle and a group of students. During this hands-on learning experience, they exchanged different species of seedlings and discussed the key elements needed for these plants to thrive, including the right soil, water, and sunlight.
“Trees teach us to stay rooted while soaring to great heights. We must teach our children how to use the land to their advantage. As a community, we must also do more to increase food security, beautify our surroundings and protect our planet,” says Mrs. Samuel.
In the lead up to her 90th Birthday on May 12th, this avid gardener intends to distribute 90 fruit trees as part of her legacy. As part of her Earth Day celebration, she hosted a free fruit tree giveaway and distributed guava, soursop, dragon fruit, cherry, plum and sugar apple plants to the public.
Grandma Mirie, as she is affectionately known, has a strong connection to the land. She will share her life story in a book titled Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy. This memoir begins with Mirie planting dumbs seeds at age 4. Raised in an agrarian community, the book highlights many of her experiences, as an ordinary woman with an extraordinary life story. She shares her recipe for how to lead a humble yet fulfilling life, and some of the ingredients that yield great rewards. The book is an ode to the many sacrifices that mothers like Miriam make for their families and community.
Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy will be launched on Mother’s Day weekend, May 11th in Fitches Creek. There will be a book signing at an event dubbed “Mirie’s Marketplace.” For more information Tel: 268-732-1201.
