Candid Reflection on Antigua’s Readiness for Openly LGBTQ+ Representation

DEAR EDITOR:

I am writing to offer a candid perspective on the recent announcement of an openly LGBTQ+ member seeking a place in Antigua’s parliament.

This development raises an important question: Is Antigua, a nation with deep Christian roots, ready to embrace an openly LGBTQ+ member of parliament?

It is no secret that Antigua and Barbuda holds a strong Christian identity, and this religious tradition is an integral part of our culture and history. Christianity plays a central role in the lives of many Antiguans and Barbudans, guiding their values and beliefs.

In light of this, the announcement of an openly LGBTQ+ candidate’s run for office may understandably raise concerns and questions within our community.

It is crucial to acknowledge that Antigua’s readiness for LGBTQ+ representation in politics should be a subject of sincere and open dialogue.

Such discussions can help bridge the gap between tradition and progress, as they allow us to explore how our Christian values align with the principles of inclusion, diversity, and equal representation in a democratic society.

The journey toward LGBTQ+ inclusivity is not unique to Antigua. Numerous countries worldwide, even those with strong religious traditions, have experienced similar debates and transitions in recent years.

It is an opportunity for our society to engage in constructive conversations that help us navigate the path towards embracing diversity while respecting our cherished cultural and religious heritage.

While questions may be raised about Antigua’s readiness, it is important to remember that the decision to support or oppose a candidate should be based on their qualifications, values, and commitment to the betterment of our nation, rather than solely on their sexual orientation.

Openly LGBTQ+ individuals, like all citizens, have a right to participate in our democratic processes, and we must ensure that their candidacy is evaluated fairly and objectively.

As we contemplate this matter, let us remember the principles of tolerance, understanding, and respect that are also fundamental to our Christian faith.

It is an opportunity for our nation to reflect on how we can balance our religious values with the broader principles of equality, justice, and representation for all.

In conclusion, the readiness of Antigua to elect an openly LGBTQ+ member of parliament is a question that deserves thoughtful consideration. Let us engage in constructive dialogue and reflect on our values as a society.

Through open and respectful conversations, we can find common ground that respects our Christian heritage while promoting a more inclusive and equitable future.

  1. Antigua has no leader in this regard. What we have are an abundance of followers willing to march behind the the perverted and deviant US to hell. We need Jamaican like gumption.

  2. First of all, Antiguans seem to throw their Christianity around when it suits them. Where is it when children go missing and abused, animals are abused, people are Starving. Gagstas out shooting up neighbourhoods wearing gold and diamond crosses. Are.you helping your neighbors? Are you kind? Are you accepting of everyone? …just think for a minute … Think back to the last election The name calling and abusiveness between candidates putting on their Trump. NOT Christian behaviour.

  3. It seems like some folks want to turn Antigua and Barbuda like Sodom and Gomorrah. Everything America spits out, some Caribbean nations want to swallow it…wrong turn Miss Parker. The writer of the article seems to be testing people’s resolves by trying to be a smooth writer but, there’s a lot of educated and uneducated smart people around. You’re trying to push an agenda but…we are still a christian nation.

  4. Inclusivity !!!

Therein lies part of the problems.

Before we attempt to engage in discourse of the issue tabled, we first need to bring clarity to the submission “Antigua and Barbuda has strong christian roots… we hold strong christian identity and this religious tradition is an integral part of our history and culture.”

I humbly submit that a people been taught right from wrong and living right in accordance with God’s Word are two different things.

Being religious by going to church and living being a Christian, (one who follows Christ’s example, having surrendered their life to him in repentance and faith) are diametrically opposed in this argument. A religious person can entertain the discussion, while a Christian person holding true to God’s Word simply will abhor the very thought.

What are we teaching our children is we give credence to an openly professed LGBTQ person, by acquiescing to such behaviour, in the interest of transparency and consideration of their accreditation and not what they stand for. (which by the way goes against ordained plan.)

We need to call it for what it is… Wong and has no place in our history as a people, (to use your term) with strong Christian values, let alone a people with Godly, healthy and reverential fear of God’s Word.

Simply put, it has no place !!! Least we forget what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah, should we continue down this slippery slope.

Christians are indeed taught to ‘hate the sin in people but love the sinner enough to still witness to them.’

A word to the wise is sufficient

    • Articles like these are really hilarious. The author tried to be impartial but the biases are blatant. The lifestyle of the LGBTQ community stands in direct opposition of Christianity. The author makes it sounds as a homosexual lifestyle is progress and if so anything else will be automatically deemed outdated. Who decides this? We have watched this story played out on the grand stage and now to come and say that a candidate should just be judge on qualifications and merits not just his sexual orientations is an insult to ones intelligence. We have seen representation from this community push laws base on their sexual orientation. We have seen the confusion of gender ideology. This is not progress. What the author fail to state that the many countries who are refusing to buy into this propaganda of the LGBTQ community because they see it as destructive towards nation building. Please spare us the attempt to sensitise us to opening up the idea. Christians ate only deemed inclusive when they give way to the LGBTQ community but the question is why. Why not the LGBT community give way to the Christians lifestyle why is the Christian is asked to assimilate into the lesser and not the other way around. The crafted words used in this article are biased against the Christians

  5. These comments give me jokes! Gay related articles are the only ones that attract comments, where are your views when your so called Christian islanders are gunning n stabbing each other? Hypocrites, smiling in your neighbours face in church yet cussing them behind their back.
