The transfer of a broadcast license from Observer Media Group to NewScope was among issues discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
According to the notes from the meeting, the Cabinet reviewed the presentation which took place in the Parliament on the subject of the media personalities who have seemingly purchased equipment and other intangibles from the bankrupt Observer Media Group (OMG) and are operating continuously as Observer Radio.
NewScope is the new parent company under which the reformed Observer is being operated.
Leading Caribbean media personality Algernon ‘Serpent’ Watts and veteran Antigua broadcaster Dave Lester Payne are the principals of NewScope.
According to the Cabinet notes, the Minister responsible for Telecommunications had offered a 10-minute commentary to the Parliamentary sitting this week under the agenda item called “Statement by Ministers.”
“It was pointed out that the law does not permit ownership of the radio broadcast equipment unless one possesses a broadcast license,” the Cabinet notes said.
“Further, a broadcast license cannot be transferred from one owner to another, under the law.”
It said the Minister revealed the discussion that has taken place between the lawyer for the new entity and the Solicitor General, by letters as well as by oral communication.
The new management of Observer is adamant that it has done everything above board and according to the law.
