Despite the geographic distance, Malta and Antigua and Barbuda share much in common as Small Island States and as members of the Commonwealth.
Both countries remarked on the pressing state of environmental challenges in their own regions, and for the need for increased international collaboration and cooperation on climate issues.
There was also an agreement that greater international advocacy on behalf of Small Island States is required, and that Malta and Antigua and Barbuda will liaise and pursue advocacy for the interests of Small Island States and Small Island Developing States at the level of the United Nations and all other international fora.
Such support will be evident during the upcoming 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States which will be hosted in St. John’s and in Malta’s capacity as a member of the European Union and elected member of the United Nations Security Council.
Further, both countries underlined their support for the upcoming COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan later during 2024.
Malta and Antigua and Barbuda also celebrated the growth of their bilateral cooperation which began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the past two years the two countries have been cooperating on water management issues, and the positive momentum in relations has been crowned by today’s joint signature of the founding document of the Global Maritime Sanctions Information Centre.
Through this Centre, the two countries hope to promote training and the sharing of information between ship registries around the world, with the aim of improving maritime security and isolating unsavoury actors.
The Honourable Minister also engaged in courtesy calls with Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta; Honourable Anton Refalo, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights, His Excellency Professor Godfrey Pirotta, Ambassador and Chairman of the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) and D Stefano Moncada, Director of the Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta. Minister Greene was accompanied by Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner and Ms. Chantal Phillip, Minister Counsellor within the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in London.
