As part of the countdown to her 90th Birthday celebration on May 12th, Miriam Samuel, an avid gardener will share the priceless joy of planting and watching trees sprout. She wants to “grow“ memories and leave a legacy of fruit trees all over Antigua, to help instill a sense of our commitment to Mother Earth.

“Everyone wants to pick the fruit, but first you must plant the tree. As a community we must all come together to increase food security and to beautify our surroundings. Let us celebrate nature, conservation, and sustainability,” says Grandma Mirie.

This retired teacher who taught at nine schools in Antigua throughout her 40-year career, also wants to highlight the importance of planting trees as part of Financial Literacy Month. “There are a lot of lessons from gardening that we can apply to money management. Even if money grew on trees, you would have to first plant the tree and tend it to see your “money tree” grow,” Mrs. Samuel said.

In the lead up to her 90th Birthday, Grandma Mirie, owner of a small agri-business, Screw Pine,  has embarked on a “Kindness Tour” to share her wisdom, knowledge and free samples of her products with the community. She will share her life story in a book Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy. This memoir begins with Mirie planting dumbs seeds at age 4 and highlights many aspects of her life as an ordinary woman leading an extraordinary life. She shares her recipe for how to lead a humble yet fulfilling life, and some of the ingredients that yield great rewards. The book is an ode to the many sacrifices that mothers like Miriam make for their families and community.

Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy will be launched on Mother’s Day weekend on May 11th in Fitches Creek. There will be a book signing at an event dubbed “Mirie’s Marketplace.” For more information Tel: 268-732-1201.
