The Minister of Works, Hon. Maria Browne has come in for harsh criticism, as yet another vehicle has veered off the roadway near the construction site at Cades Bay Bridge, landing in a 9-foot ravine. The accident occurred last Sunday, during heightened traffic conditions, because of the Seafood Festival in Urlings.

UPP Candidate for St. Mary’s South, Kelvin “Shugy” Simon first raised the alarm about the hazardous conditions at the Cades Bay Bridge, in Parliament earlier this year. He warned that poor road conditions could lead to significant safety issues and serious accidents. A few weeks thereafter, a vehicle ran off the roadway and into the ravine. A makeshift traffic bypass has been constructed, but little progress has been made to rebuild the bridge, jeopardizing the safety of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The construction of the Cades Bay Bridge began in November 2019, yet a projected date of completion has not been announced. Simon believes that the Cades Bay Bridge must be modernized to withstand the effects of climate change and he is calling for several issues to be addressed immediately. These include the eroding roadway with a sharp drop-off, the lack of signage warning of the hazards, the overgrowth and obstructions blocking the view of the roadway as well as poor lighting.
“The community has been crying out for the government to address this safety issue and their calls have been disregarded. Work has been proceeding at a snail’s pace and since the general elections, construction has come to a virtual halt. This is a very hazardous work zone and motorists must navigate the area with caution. ABLP has failed to invest in our country’s infrastructure, and they have been unduly careless in maintaining a safe work zone at Cades Bay,” Simon said.
With the staging of the Piango Fest at Cades Bay this weekend, Simon is calling for safety barriers and other measures be put in place immediately. The status of the driver, passengers and the severity of their injuries, in Sunday’s accident remain unclear.
