Police commissioner reassures that crime numbers are changing, but not spiraling out of control.
“What we have discovered and shared with the general public is that there has been a slight increase in certain types of crimes.
These include property acquisition crimes, break-ins, and malicious damage. We are greatly concerned as the numbers continue to climb. Reports of stolen items from businesses, homes, and farms have been on the rise.
Incidents of home invasion when individuals are away and robberies have also been reported.
While the number of robberies in 2022 was less than in 2021, we observed a worrisome trend in the early part of 2023.
By that time, we had already surpassed the number of robberies recorded in the previous year.
For instance, in 2021, there were 98 reported robberies, while in 2022, there were 87. This year, the figures started to climb, raising concerns about a potential increase in robberies.
However, it is important to note that we wouldn’t classify the situation as a crisis or an escalation.
The numbers are changing, indicating the need for urgent and aggressive action from the police to address the issue.
Areas of particular concern are the frequent break-ins into people’s homes and thefts occurring in office spaces. It is disheartening that personal belongings are no longer safe, even in seemingly secure locations.
Farmers have also been targeted, with livestock and agricultural products being stolen.
We cannot predict where our homicide rate will go, but we have seen a decrease in recent years. In 2021, there were 16 homicides, which reduced to 10 in 2022.
So far, we have had eight reported cases this year, although there were ten deaths. These are the offenses that we are particularly concerned about.
