(Fox Weather) — Hurricane conditions and heavy rainfall are expected over the Leeward Islands on Saturday as Hurricane Tammy bears down on islands that make up the eastern Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
Tammy strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Friday before bearing down several of the northern Lesser Antilles which reported gusty winds and angry seas before the heart of the storm moved through.
Weather conditions are expected to remain squally through the weekend as the late-season hurricane passes through the islands.
Once the cyclone passes through, attention will turn to an area of the Caribbean not so far away that is being monitored for the chance of development.
Hurricane Tammy is about 65 miles southeast of Guadeloupe and 50 miles east of Dominica.
Maximum sustained winds are at 80 mph with higher gusts. The NHC said that fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next few days, but Tammy is expected to remain a hurricane while it passes near or over the Leeward Islands.
Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy are under Hurricane Warnings.
What is the forecast for Hurricane Tammy?
Tammy is moving west-northwest at 9 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue through Saturday night, the NHC said. A turn toward the north-northwest is forecast on Sunday, followed by a turn toward the north on Monday.
On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands through early Sunday, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands by Sunday afternoon.
Heavy rainfall is also expected across the region while Tammy spins across the eastern Caribbean.
Depending on the exact tract of the cyclone, some islands could see at least a foot of rainfall.
Rainfall totals of 1-2 inches with higher amounts of up to 4 inches are expected in the British and U.S. Virgin Islands into eastern Puerto Rico.
Those rains may produce flash and urban flooding, along with isolated mudslides in the higher terrain.
A storm surge could also raise water levels by 1-3 feet above normal tide levels near where the center of Tropical Storm Tammy moves across the Leeward Islands.
After passing the northern Caribbean islands, Tammy is expected to be pulled northward by a frontal boundary but stay well clear of the Lower 48.
Area in southwestern Caribbean Sea monitored for possible development
Disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the far southwestern Caribbean Sea are associated with a broad area of low pressure, the NHC said.
Some slow development of this system is possible during the next few days while it moves slowly westward over the southwestern Caribbean Sea.
The disturbance is forecast to move inland over Central America on Monday or early Tuesday, and no further development is expected after that time
