(REAL News) — On Tuesday, May 9th, the businessman, who was reportedly granted unlawful station bail last week, appeared in St. John’s Magistrates’ Court on a rape charge.
It was not confirmed if he had been granted bail on the indictable offense. Instead, the magistrate imposed a $20,000 bail condition with a cash deposit of $5,000.
The court required him to present two sureties to sign on his behalf and report to the Johnsons Point Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
As the accused has a similar case pending, he was not required to surrender his travel documents, which are still with the court.
The man had been charged since the previous week, but as of Monday, May 8th, the charges had not been filed in court, and the prosecution did not have the case file.
However, on Monday of this week, REAL News reported on the incident, as well as residents’ complaints about preferential treatment by the police.
The charges were filed the following day, May 9th, allowing the accused to appear before the magistrate properly.
The alleged offense was committed at the accused’s place of business.
